Grandparents and children sharing tips and storiesMy skin cancer story

From Lisa Spain in Broadstairs

Last summer my sister noticed I had a lump in my ear. It didn't hurt or cause me any problems but my family insisted I get it checked.

After being referred to the hospital and lots of tests later, I was told it was skin cancer. I thought I was going to be sick after hearing the news. It's the word cancer and you imagine the worst. It was harder on my family hearing the news. I remained positive after the shock had worn off.

I have now been successfully treated; I had the lump removed and a skin flap done. I love the summer weather and use sun cream but didn't think to apply it in my ears because my hair covers my ears. From now on I will apply sun cream to my ears, but will also keep them covered.
