A study to find out more about symptoms and experiences that young women have before being diagnosed with cancer of the cervix

Please note this trial is no longer recruiting patients.

This study aims to learn more about the symptoms and experiences that young women have before being diagnosed with cervical cancer.

Researchers are asking young women who have been diagnosed with cervical cancer about their symptoms and the events leading up to their diagnosis.

The overall aim of the study is to ensure that in the future, young women with cervical cancer can be diagnosed as quickly as possible.

Who can enter

You may be able to join this study if you

  • Have been diagnosed with cervical cancer in the last 6 months
  • Are between 18 and 29 years old

Please note – this study is for women who have been diagnosed with cervical cancer. It is not for women who have had a smear test that shows they have abnormal cells in the cervix.

Trial design

If you agree to take part in the study, a female researcher will arrange an interview with you. They will ask you to describe when and how you were diagnosed with cervical cancer and any symptoms you had. She will ask your permission to make an audio recording of the interview.

The researcher will also ask if the study team can look at your medical notes to check when you went to see your doctor and which tests you had. If you don’t want the researchers to look at your medical notes, you can still take part in the interview.

Any information you give is confidential. It will not be possible to identify you in any results of the study.

Hospital visits

The interview takes between 30 minutes and an hour. The researcher will arrange this at a time and place that is convenient for you. This may be done by phone or in person, at your home, or in hospital.

Side effects

There are no side effects associated with taking part in this study, but if you are upset by issues raised in the interview, the researcher will be able to help you find more support if you need it.
