A study looking at the genetics of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia
This study is trying to find out more about the genes that might cause chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). This study is only open to people in the North Trent Cancer Network. This covers South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and Bassetlaw.
In this study the researchers will look at the family history and genes of a large number of people with CLL and compare them with people who do not have CLL.
The aim of this study is to identify genes that may increase the risk of CLL.
Please note you won’t get any direct benefit from taking part in this study, nor will it affect any treatment you have. The findings may help people with CLL in the future.
Recruitment
Phase
Who can enter
You can enter this trial if you live in the North Trent area and have CLL.
You cannot enter this trial if
- Your doctor feels you are not well enough to take part
- In your family there is a known inherited gene that increases your risk of cancer
Trial design
This study will recruit about 720 people in total from the North Trent Cancer Network. About 350 will have CLL and 350 will not.
For people with CLL your doctor at the hospital will invite you to take part in this study. Or you will receive a letter, with a reply slip and pre paid envelope, inviting you to take part.
For people who do not have CLL, your GP will send you a letter inviting you to take part in this study. The letter will explain the study and have a reply slip and pre paid envelope with it.
The researchers will interview everyone taking part in this study. They will ask questions about you, your family and the history of cancer in your family.
They will take a sample of your blood and saliva. They will use these samples to look at genes in the cells.
They will arrange to do this at a place most convenient to you. It can be at the hospital, your GP surgery or your own home.
They will also ask permission to look at your medical records.
The researchers will ask your permission to store all this information in a computer. It will be stored using a coded number, with no personal details, such as your name and address. So it will not be possible to identify you. The researchers will also ask your permission to share this information with their research partners at the University of Utah.
Hospital visits
There are no extra hospital visits if you take part in this study.
Side effects
You may have a bit of discomfort when you have your blood sample taken.
